How to Price Your Services Without Underselling Yourself
Stop underselling yourself. Learn the exact methods successful service professionals use to price their work, create profitable packages, and know when to raise rates.

You're Probably Charging Too Little
Let's be honest: most service professionals — DJs, photographers, planners, trainers, consultants — undercharge when they start. And many never fix it.
Here's a simple test: If you're booking 90% or more of your inquiries, your prices are too low. The sweet spot is 40-60% conversion rate.
The Cost-Plus Pricing Method
Start with your real costs:
Monthly expenses:
- Equipment costs/depreciation: $___
- Insurance: $___
- Software subscriptions: $___
- Marketing/advertising: $___
- Vehicle/travel costs: $___
- Phone/internet: $___
Per-event costs:
- Travel time and fuel: $___
- Setup/teardown time: $___
- Actual performance/service time: $___
- Admin time (emails, calls, contracts): $___
Add it all up. Now add your desired hourly rate × total hours per gig. That's your minimum price.
The Market Positioning Method
Research 10 competitors in your area:
- What do they charge?
- What's included in their packages?
- What's their experience level?
Position yourself in the top 30-40% of pricing. Being the cheapest is a race to the bottom.
Package Pricing (The Secret Weapon)
Never offer just one price. Create three tiers:
Bronze / Basic — Your entry point
- Core service only
- Priced at your minimum viable rate
Silver / Standard — Your sweet spot (80% of clients choose this)
- Core service + popular add-ons
- Priced 30-50% above Bronze
Gold / Premium — Your aspirational offer
- Everything included + exclusive perks
- Priced 2-3x above Bronze
The Gold package makes Silver look like a bargain. This is called "price anchoring."
When to Raise Prices
Raise your prices when:
- You're booking more than 60% of inquiries
- You have more than 4 weeks of advance bookings
- You've gained new skills, equipment, or certifications
- It's been more than 12 months since your last increase
Track Everything
You can't optimize what you don't measure. Track:
- Inquiry-to-booking conversion rate
- Average booking value
- Revenue per service type
- Seasonal trends
GigStack's analytics dashboard shows all of this in real time, so you always know if your pricing is working.
